Deadpool & Wolverine kept making box office history and smashing more records in its second week, raking in a surprising $97 million domestically — the eighth biggest second weekend ever and the fifth biggest for an MCU film — bringing its 10-day North American total to $395.6 million. It dropped just 53 percent, which is pretty impressive.

The overseas numbers were just as amazing. The Marvel Studios and Disney blockbuster pulled in another $110.5 million internationally, pushing its foreign total to $428.5 million and global earnings to $824.1 million. (Looks like Deadpool & Wolverine will be joining the billion-dollar box office club in just a few days.)

It achieved several key milestones. In a big win for star and franchise creator Ryan Reynolds, the third Deadpool movie has now surpassed Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, which made $371.1 million, to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time in the domestic market, without inflation adjustments. This is another big feather-in-the-mask for Reynolds and shows how much the film has succeeded in setting new box office records.

It has also managed to exceed the total earnings of both the first and second Deadpool films, both in the domestic market and internationally, after only two weekends in theaters. The original Deadpool film had a domestic gross of $363.1 million and a worldwide total of $782.6 million. Meanwhile, the second film brought in $318.5 million in domestic earnings and had a global total of $734.5 million. In just a short time, this latest installment has outpaced these previous figures, showcasing its massive success and the continued popularity of the franchise.

It has climbed to No. 3 on the list of top-grossing R-rated films worldwide. Currently, Todd Phillips’ Joker holds the No. 1 spot with $1.064 billion, so it might take another week or so for Deadpool & Wolverine to surpass it. Many expects the film to eventually reach around $1.2 billion. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is in the No. 2 position for R-rated films globally, with $975.2 million.

With summer successes like Inside Out 2 — which are now the highest-grossing animated film ever with a total of $1.56 billion — and Deadpool 3, Disney has become the first studio to surpass $3 billion in global ticket sales.

Directed by Shawn Levy and featuring Hugh Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine are far ahead of its competitors this weekend, though Amblin Entertainment’s Twisters is also performing well.

Twisters, distributed domestically by Universal, saw a 37 percent drop in it’s third weekend, earning $22.7 million and bringing its domestic total to $195.6 million.
